| We Care Community Development Assistance
One of the greatest challenges that Kenya is facing today is the HIV/AIDS pandemic. It is a problem that cannot be ignored and has to faced by all us. Statistics show that at least 700 people die everyday from the disease. The government has recognized that the church is an important contact point for Kenyans, its an important entry point into the community and that church leaders have undeniable authority over their church membership. The church therefore has a a vital role to play in the HIV/AIDS pandemic and is doing so by providing an enabling environment where church members can use their gifts and talents for the benefit of HIV/AIDS ministry in the church and fighting the spirit of stigmatization, hatred, hostility and disrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. Another challenge facing our country is the shortage of rains. In 2004, we experienced a severe food shortage in Kenya due to insufficient rains in at least five provinces and over 3 million people were affected. As a result of this, the Deliverance Church family felt the need to respond to the government's call to bring our resources together and fight the situation in the country. The church was therefore involved in distributing food to the affected areas. In the course of distributing relief food, the vision of sinking bore holes in arid and semi-arid areas was conceived. Surveys showed that there are very few rivers in these areas and they are seasonal, they have large volumes of water during the rains but they dry up when the rains subside. The water that is there is stagnant and contaminated hence compromising people's health. The same water is used for bathing, by animals and also for household chores. Sinking boreholes in such areas would enable area residents gain access to clean water. Most arid and semi arid areas are inhabited by pastoralists who move around with their animals in search of water and pastures. If they could get water, they would be able to settle down and cultivate their land hence changing their standards of living. This would be a big step toward providing a lasting solution to the food shortage problem in this country in future because with access to water, residents in the affected areas would be able to irrigate their farms making them productive.
The We Care Community Development Assistance (WCCDA) is thus an initiative of Deliverance Church Nakuru designed to impact communities in Kenya with the love and compassion of Christ through projects such as Drilling Bore Holes in arid and semi-arid areas, Relief Food Distribution and HIV/AIDS Projects. It's a program that seeks to address the physical needs of the community by identifying and attempting to provide lasting solutions to those challenges. We are compelled by what James says: "Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?" James 2:15-16 We want to do something about the physical needs of our fellow brothers and sisters who face challenging situations. |
